The Acorn

Date: 2024

Architect/Designer: Begent Architecture

Structural Engineers: Simple Works

Location: Devon

Through a copse nestled in the Devon countryside sits a six-metre high acorn, housing a holiday retreat. Following a successful application to Airbnb’s “OMG!Fund”, Timber Workshop were engaged to fabricate and install the geometrically ambitious timber framed dome which forms the acorn’s structure.

The parametrically defined dome is constructed from a tessellated series of cranked diamonds, prefabricated to ensure a high degree of dimensional accuracy. These were brought together on site, estabilishing the curved geometry of the building. The frame is exposed within and was constructed from joinery grade Ash, allowing a fine finish.
