How We Work
We can be engaged as the main contractor, specialist subcontractors or design consultants. We design and build, design, and just build. We deliver complete buildings, install structural frames, and fabricate furniture and kitchens.
We are passionate about carpentry. We work with softwoods, hardwoods and engineered timbers. We use traditional and contemporary jointing, utilise age-old carpentry techniques whilst embracing modern tooling and CNC technology.
Our Team
Alex Thomas
DIRECTOR
MA (CANTAB), DIP ARCH, ARB
Timber Workshop is run by Alex Thomas. He is a carpenter and fully qualified Architect. Having studied at Cambridge and the London Metropolitan University, he sought experience in design-led London architecture practices including Henley Halebrown, Eric Parry and Feilden Fowles Architects, before moving to Devon to pursue a passion for carpentry. Through working for Devon based companies Emanuel Hendry and Carpenter Oak, Alex has been involved in both contemporary and traditional framing techniques on both small and large scale projects across the UK.
He formed Timber Workshop in 2016 to continue his investigation into both design and carpentry.
Tom Kempton
HEAD OF PRODUCTION
Tom runs the production of projects through our workshop and onto site. Having studied film at the University of East Anglia, he moved to Devon to begin a career in heavy timber structural framing at Carpenter Oak, Totnes. Working there for 13 years, Tom went from trainee to principal carpenter, overseeing teams of craftsmen and apprentices.
He is an extremely talented and experienced carpenter, and has worked on prestigious projects all over Europe, including the construction of Penistone Market Hall, and the rebuilding of Carrickfergus castle in Northern Ireland.
His interest in fine joinery and tooling feeds into our work at all scales, and drives forwards Timber Workshop’s passion for delivering high quality products that tread a path between joinery and timber framing.
